Biographical Information.
CHARACTER NAME: Nymphadora Ophelia Tonks-Lupin. Most people call her Tonks, though a few (such as her mother and husband) call her Dora.
DOB/AGE: December 16, 1973, making Tonks 24 by the end of DH.
HOUSE/YEARS: Tonks was a Hufflepuff, and attended Hogwarts from 1984-1991.
BLOODLINE: Tonks’ mother, Andromeda, is a pureblood, and her father, Ted, was a Muggleborn, making Tonks a half-blood. She is also a Metamorphmagus (has the ability to change her physical appearance at will).
SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Generally considers herself open to suggestions, but for all intents and purposes is heterosexual.
RESIDENCE: Has a flat in London.
POLITICAL AFFILIATION: Recruited by Alastor Moody to the Order of the Phoenix in 1995. Tonks is very much against the Death Eaters and what they stand for.
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: Tonks can look like whatever she wants at any given time, but her “natural” form is petite, slightly athletic build, about 5’4”, with a heart-shaped face, brown hair and gray eyes. She’s attractive, but far from strikingly beautiful. Most of her charm comes from her good nature and optimistic outlook. Her hair and eyes are usually different from their “natural” form (very, very few people know that her eyes are gray, usually she makes them brown), and she prefers her hair short, spiky, and brightly colored.
PERSONALITY: The first impression one usually gets with Tonks is that she’s energetic, outgoing and generally fun to be around. This bears itself out with further acquaintance. Tonks is fundamentally optimistic and hopeful, she has strong ideals and an even stronger moral compass that she lives by. She is unendingly loyal to those she loves – she will forgive them just about anything, almost to a fault. She’s a hard worker, and once she sets her mind to something, it’ll get done to the best of her ability.
On the down side, Tonks tends to be spontaneous, a little bit thoughtless, and occasionally impatient. Her highs are quite high and her lows are correspondingly low. When she’s having a hard time, she is just as unable to hide it as she is unable to hide her good moods. It doesn’t happen often, but when she hits bottom, she hits it hard and it may adversely affect her ability to function.
Tonks is somewhat scatterbrained, and while she’s pretty endlessly curious, if she isn’t interested in something it can be difficult for her to stay motivated. Her marks at Hogwarts were generally very high, but only in those subjects she needed to get into Auror training. She failed Astronomy completely, not having any interest in the movements of the stars and planets, for instance.
HOBBIES/HABITS/IDIOSYNCRASIES: The first idiosyncrasy one notices about Tonks is that she’s clumsy. Living in a body that can change its dimensions (and does, frequently) has made her a danger to breakable knick-knacks and she’s constantly running into things, knocking things (or people) over, and having to cast a quick reparo on broken items.
She doesn’t have too many hobbies, except perhaps reading trashy Muggle romance novels, the worse the better. She’s a bit addicted to bad purple prose and finds it hilariously funny. She’s naturally curious about pretty much everything, but she’s not particularly studious by nature, being much more inclined to go outside and hike in the woods or play Quidditch with friends than spend her time in the library with a stack of books.
FAMILY BACKGROUND/PERSONAL HISTORY: Pretty much everything about Dora's upbringing was unconventional, even by wizarding standards. To begin with, her mother was a beautiful scion of one of the oldest, richest and most prominent pureblooded families in England, while her father was a seemingly-ordinary Muggleborn with a stolid middle-class upbringing and decidedly liberal politics. Being born a metamorphmagus didn't help things much. The condition is incredibly rare and it took almost a year before her parents found a mediwizard who was able to give a name to their daughter's unusual abilities. For all this, though, Dora was raised in a stable and loving environment, was given a good set of values through which to interpret the world and was taught to value herself as a person, possibly the most important thing that could have been taught to a half-blooded "freak" who never really grew out of the awkward and clumsy stage of adolescence.
Hogwarts was a no-brainer for a child with Dora's unique abilities, and she entered that venerated institution in 1984, sorted into Hufflepuff. Dora was never particularly academic in her inclinations, but she knew going in that she wanted to be an Auror and she knew exactly what that entailed, so she knew she would have to work incredibly hard to make top marks and earn her entry into the Auror training program. This work ethic didn't preclude some troublemaking, however, and her ability to look like anyone proved invaluable on a number of occasions in school. She was usually able to avoid punishment, particularly when she involved her best friend Charlie Weasley, who was a Gryffindor prefect and thus knew how to get himself out of trouble, but she was enough of a prankster that she was not given the responsibility herself.
NEWTS were passed with top marks, and Dora distinguished herself in the Auror training program as a mistress of disguises, though she felt she would always be hopeless at dueling, due to her proclivity to trip and fall on her face. In 1995, her mentor, Alastor Moody, quietly recruited her into the Order of the Phoenix, where she came into contact with her cousin, Sirius Black, and his friend Remus Lupin. Fast friendships developed, and in the wake of Sirius's tragic death Dora's relationship with Remus took on a more romantic dimension. Worried for Dora's safety and afraid of what would happen in the future, Remus absented himself for most of the 1996/1997 school year, putting Dora under even more stress. In June 1997, in the wake of Dumbledore's murder, the couple reconciled, though their relationship would remain rocky, despite being married that summer and Dora's subsequent pregnancy.
Theodore (Teddy) Remus Lupin was born in the spring of 1998, and three months later, Dora and Remus perished in the Battle of Hogwarts.
THREE RANDOM FACTS ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER:1. Despite her clumsiness, which Severus Snape abhorred, Dora is a very skilled potion-maker, and she's also a pretty good cook when she's not breaking or spilling things.
2. Her very first kiss was with Charlie Weasley, who was in her same year at Hogwarts and her best friend. They quickly decided kissing each other was a bad idea, as it felt far too much like kissing a sibling.
3. For the most part, Dora is not self-conscious about her appearance, but the reason why almost no one knows she actually has gray eyes is because she thinks they make her look just a little too much like her aunt Bellatrix.
